Professor Tony Sanchez

I obtained my BA in Biological Sciences from the California State University-Fullerton in 1996. Immediately after graduating with my BA, I continued my education by going to the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU). I graduated with my Ph.D in Biological Sciences (with an emphasis in Neurophysiology) in May of 2001. My thesis work on neural plasticity of the central nerve pathways that regulate feeding behavior in Aplysia californica produced one co-author publication and four first author publications. These studies involved examining functional neural regeneration of central nerve pathways that elicit fictive feeding by using single cell electrophysiology. During my studies on regeneration, I discovered that the feeding system of Aplysia also underwent a plasticity that is reminiscent of short-term memory.

I am currently teaching full-time at Cypress College (Anatomy & Physiology Associate Professor). I teach Human Anatomy, Human Anatomy & Phyiology, and Integrated Medical Science, and Human Physiology.

My academic knowledge in numerous areas of biology, my experience as a scientist in the laboratory, and my teaching experience have played significant roles in the shaping of my teaching philosophy. I strongly believe that these experiences have given me the necessary tools to teach biology in ways that promote a better understanding of biological concepts while making education an enjoyable experience.

I believe that the goal of every instructor is to increase student's knowledge and understanding while making education an enjoyable experience. I am a firm believer that an instructor is both an educator and a facilitator. As an educator, the instructor provides the students with essential information that they need to know about the subject matter. As a facilitator, the instructor guides the students in the direction they should go to find answers and to solve problems.

I am always looking for ways to improve my teaching skills. I like to encourage my students to express their comments about my teaching ability, and the way the course is structured through the use of surveys or personal communication. I strongly believe that it is my responsibility as an educator to address student concerns and to make proper changes as needed in order to promote a better learning environment.

I am a full-time faculty member of the Biology Department at Cypress College. I truly enjoy teaching different levels of Anatomy & Physiology. I find the human body to be a very interesting topic because you get to learn about yourself - in a biological & physiological sense! I hope to convey my enthusiasm and interest in this subject to my students.

My courses are designed to be organized, stimulating and challenging. Students who complete my courses will gain a better understanding and appreciation of the miraculous human body machine!

I have been interested in biology since I was a kid. I remember in grade school pulling dead bees out of my parents' swimming pool with my sister and examining their bodies to see how they worked. Ever since then I have been learning about our own bodies and the living world around us. I love to share the information I have gathered throughout my life with my students, hopefully getting them just as excited about it all as I am.
